Step by step

How to waterproof a pool with Liquid Membrane

Follow these steps for prep, application and cure timing based on the pool surface you are coating. The goal is a clean substrate, even coverage and enough cure time before water exposure.

Prepare your space and gather your materials

• For concrete or gunnite surfaces, use Preparation D to remove mineral deposits or efflorescence. Recommended cleaners: Nu-Lift Cleaner and Stone Soap.
• For fiberglass surfaces, sand the entire surface first with 60 grit, then use Preparation B. Recommended cleaners: Power Cleaner and Stone Soap.
Ensure all surfaces are fully cleaned and dried before you begin, and gather the products and tools needed for the full project.

Fabric reinforcement

If you have any cracks wider than 1/4 inch, use Fabric Reinforcement to bridge them. Cracks smaller than 1/4 inch width can be coated over directly with SEMCO Liquid Membrane.

Masking

Mask off all areas that should not receive coating. Remove masking tape before the material has fully cured.

Applying coat

Use a 1/2 inch nap roller. Allow any pre-treated areas to fully dry first. Apply a thin coat, about 0.015 inch per coat, with brush or roller over the full substrate including pre-treated areas.
Once the surface can be walked on without residue or fingerprint impressions, apply another thin coat in an alternate direction. Inspect the final surface for pinholes, voids, thin spots or other defects and touch up where needed.
Required total thickness is 0.03 to 0.04 inches for non-submerged applications. For submerged applications, a minimum required total thickness of 60 mil is needed. Allow 6 to 7 days of full cure before filling with water.

For submerged applications, SEMCO recommends adding Extra Pigment for a more solid overall finish.

Curing time

Curing time depends on temperature, humidity and airflow, but the typical initial cure window is about 6 to 7 days according to the product recommendations.

Additional information

• Clean brushes and rollers with warm water immediately after use.
• Proper surface preparation is strongly recommended for the best bond and long-term performance.
• Stir the product thoroughly before use so the color pigments are fully mixed.
• Avoid applying in direct afternoon sun or in temperatures above 85F so the product does not dry too quickly.
• Do not apply to wet substrates or substrates still containing moisture, otherwise the product may not cure correctly and can stay tacky.
• For fully submerged applications, use 3 coats at 20 mil each and coat the full surface above the waterline.
• On non-porous surfaces such as metal or fiberglass, apply thin coats so the product can cure faster.
• If coats were applied too thick and the surface stays tacky, apply a very thin coat over the full surface and allow it to fully cure before exposing it to water.
• Pool plaster may require extended cure time because plaster holds more moisture and needs to breathe out first.
• Test a small inconspicuous area first to confirm adhesion before full application.
• If you have multiple containers, mix them together or reserve one container for the final coat to improve color consistency.

Can I use SEMCO Liquid Membrane™ to waterproof a swimming pool?

Yes — it's used to waterproof pool shells and pool decks, and once properly applied and cured it forms a seamless, flexible waterproof membrane. Pools are a fully submerged application, which is the least forgiving of shortcuts, so success depends heavily on thorough prep, enough coats, and a full cure before filling. Is SEMCO Liquid Membrane™ safe for swimming pools and the water once cured?

Yes — once fully cured, the VOC-free formula is certified safe for saltwater and potable water, so it's suitable for swimming pools. The critical word is cured: it must be fully cured (5–10 days, longer in cool/humid conditions) before the pool is filled and used. If in doubt about your timeline or pool type, confirm with support before filling.

How many coats does a pool need?

Because a pool is fully submerged, apply 3 coats to build about 60 mils total — double the standard non-submerged thickness. Reinforce any cracks, joints, or transitions with Fabric Reinforcement in the first coat. Build it up in thin, fully-cured coats; piling on thick coats that never properly cure is a leading cause of pool coating problems.

Do I need the Color Activator, and why did my pool coating come out translucent?

The base membrane is semi-clear by design, so on a submerged pool it can look translucent if you use the semi-clear base — the fix is to use a pigmented color or stir in the Color Activator for a solid, uniform finish. For pools, always choose a pigmented color and add the Color Activator so you get full, even coverage and the look you expect.

How do I prep a pool before coating?

Prep is everything on a pool. The shell must be clean, structurally sound, and dry(no more than ~3% residual moisture), free of dirt, oils, mineral deposits, old failing coatings, and efflorescence — use the appropriate SEMCO cleaner. Fill and reinforce cracks and repair spalled areas first, and make sure the surface is fully dry before you start. Coating a damp, dirty, or previously coated shell without proper prep is the top reason pool applications blister or peel.

Why is my pool coating still sticky or tacky after a few days?

A coating that's tacky days later is usually a cure issue: coats applied too thick, in cool or humid conditions, or before the previous coat set. Pools tempt people to lay it on thick, but thin, fully-cured coats are what work. Give it the full cure at moderate temperatures with airflow; if it's still tacky well past the window, reach out to support with your conditions and coat details.

What pool surfaces does it work on —concrete, gunite, plaster, fiberglass?

It bonds to concrete, gunite, plaster/cementitious shells, and fiberglass when they're properly prepped, clean, and dry. Rigid, sound substrates hold the membrane best. Very flexible plastic shells are less ideal because they move more than the bond can tolerate, so for those contact support to confirm suitability before starting.

How long must it cure before I fill the pool?

Allow the full cure — 7–10 days depending on temperature and humidity, and lean toward the longer end for a submerged pool in cooler or damp weather. Filling too early is a common cause of blistering and adhesion failure. It's worth the wait: a fully cured membrane is what delivers the watertight, durable result.

How much do I need for my pool, and can SEMCO help me plan it?

Because pools need 3 coats at roughly 100–150 sq ft per gallon per coat, plan for meaningfully more product than a single-coat estimate — measure the wetted surface area and multiply for the coats, then add margin.
